5 perspectives you may not have considered about small businesses
Small businesses do more for our communities.
These 5 points on how supporting small businesses supports us may surprise you!
Small Businesses Creates More Jobs
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy: “Despite losing 9.1 million jobs in the first two quarters of 2020, small businesses job growth rebounded swiftly following the COVID-19 recession. In the four quarters following, small businesses have gained 5.5 million jobs, making up for 60% of the decline during the early pandemic. Small businesses have generated 12.9 million new jobs over the past 25 years” That is huge!
Supporting Your Community
Small businesses are known to play a significant role in supporting local nonprofits and community causes. Studies have shown that local businesses majorly benefit from having support from a strong community, therefore small business owners recognize the importance of engaging members of the community who support them.
These statistics show that 66% of small businesses have donated to local charities in the past year.
64% have sponsored or donated goods/ services to local events.
And 56% have offered discounts to certain groups within the community, teachers or veterans, for example.
Compared to the average of donations coming from larger corporations being about 20%, it is amazing what small businesses can do.
Better Customer Service
When it comes to a small-business owner, every customer interaction matters. In 2011, American Express Global Customer Service Barometer showed the impact great customer service can do for a small business.
81% of respondents to the American Express survey claimed that small businesses offer better customer service.
Overall, 70% felt more inspired to spend more money at businesses with great customer service, so those 2 statistics go hand-in-hand.
These numbers add up to 13% more compared to businesses with secondary customer service skills.
Even in more recent studies in 2023, according to Bankrate: “90% of all U.S. adults believe that small businesses provide better experiences than large businesses in at least one area.
While large corporations have a “one size fits all” mentality, small businesses have the opportunity to offer a more personalized customer experience and more satisfying problem-solving methods.
Nurturing Creativity
A small business owner has no shortage of creative passion. They also have the freedom and ability to create almost anything, with some artists willing to accept personalized commissions for a specific customer. That is something that is unheard of with big corporations.
The joy of finding the perfect item for yourself or a loved one from a small business is also unmatched. Chances are, that is the only version of that item you’ll be able to find. With keeping handmade items in mind, each item is uniquely made with their own quirks that its companion just won’t have.
Support The American Dream
There are countless stories of small business owners abandoning their previous careers in pursuit of happiness. This pursuit is one to be admired. Going against the grain and leaving what is comfortable proves that these small business owners believe their goods and services have what it takes.
The American dream is the belief that equal opportunity be made available to any American. Equal Opportunity allows us the freedom to achieve our highest personal aspirations and goals.
“Small-business owners not only believe in this dream but have actively pursued it. By supporting small businesses and shopping small, you’re supporting real, genuine people who have put their passion ahead of convenience and whole-heartedly believe in the business they are running.”
When you take a moment to appreciate all the good small businesses do for our communities, it’s easy to make the right choice when knowing where to spend your money. Once small purchase can make a big difference!
